Pharmacovigilance (PV) is defined as the science and activity linked to detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of any side effect or problem related to drugs. WHO established its own Program for International Drug Monitoring in response to thaloidomide catastrophe disclosed in 1961. Together with WHO Collaborating Center for International Drug Monitoring, UPSALA, the WHO promoted the PV at countries level. At the end of 2010, 134 countries were part of PHV program of WHO. PHv aims to improve patients care and their safety when using drugs; and to support public health programs by providing credible and equilibrated information for effective assessment of the risk-benefit profile of the drugs.
